It's Fire Prevention Week — Is Your Furnace on the List?

Chris Geer • September 9, 2026

Fire Prevention Week runs October 4–10 this year, and if you're like most homeowners, your fire safety checklist probably starts and ends with smoke detector batteries. But there's one item that deserves a spot on that list and rarely gets one: your furnace.

Heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fires every single year, and the vast majority of those fires happen in the fall and winter — right when furnaces are getting fired up for the first time in months. Before you flip that switch on the thermostat, a few minutes of prevention can save you a lot more than a headache.

Three Things to Check Before You Turn on the Heat

1. Test your carbon monoxide detector batteries. CO is odorless, colorless, and produced by any fuel-burning furnace — which is exactly what makes it so dangerous. If your detector's batteries are dead or its been sitting unchecked since last spring, now's the time to fix that. If you don't have a CO detector near your sleeping areas, this is the week to get one.

2. Clear the area around your furnace. Boxes, holiday decorations, cleaning supplies, paint cans — garages and basements have a way of turning into storage space, and furnace closets are no exception. Fire safety experts recommend at least three feet of clearance around any heating equipment. Take a walk down to your mechanical room and see what's crept in over the summer.

3. Don't skip the annual inspection. This is the one homeowners put off the longest, and it's the one that catches the problems you can't see or smell — a cracked heat exchanger, a fraying wire, a clogged flue that's venting exhaust somewhere it shouldn't. An inspection isn't just about keeping your furnace running efficiently; it's about making sure it's running safely.

Why This Matters Coming From Us

As a Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer, our technicians go through Carrier's factory training on exactly this kind of equipment — which means when we inspect your furnace, we know precisely what to look for and what "normal wear" versus "get this fixed now" actually looks like. That training, backed by Carrier's standards, is a big part of why Fire Prevention Week is personal for us, not just a marketing hook.
